A new sound is useful information, but it is rarely a diagnosis on its own. The same word—clicking, buzzing, knocking—can describe different events in different appliances. What matters is the sound together with the model, the operating stage, the surrounding conditions, and any change in performance.
Begin by separating an unfamiliar sound from a clear hazard. Smoke, sparks, a burning smell, leaking water near electrical equipment, or violent movement call for stopping ordinary use and seeking appropriate help, without approaching unsafe equipment. A recording is never more important than leaving a dangerous situation.
For a routine unexplained sound without those warning signs, a careful description is more useful than immediately naming an internal part. You can give support good evidence without opening a panel or dismantling the appliance.
A refrigerator is not silent while it works
Cooling involves moving fluids, running motors and fans, operating controls, and, on some models, making ice or defrosting. Those activities can produce different sounds at different times.
GE Appliances' guide to normal refrigerator sounds includes examples associated with refrigerant movement, fan changes, controls, and ice-making. The examples are tied to appliance designs and functions; they are not permission to call every household hiss or buzz harmless.
The first useful question is therefore whether the appliance actually has the feature that could explain the sound. A description involving an ice maker is irrelevant to a refrigerator without one. A sound attributed to a particular model's defrost cycle may not apply to a different design.
Use the model's own manual or manufacturer support page as the reference. A familiar brand name is not enough when the company sells many configurations with different components.
“New to me” and “new for the appliance” differ
You may notice a sound after moving into a home, replacing an appliance, or spending time in a room at a different hour. That does not establish that the sound just began.
For example, a refrigerator's brief cycle may be easy to hear late at night when conversation, traffic, and other equipment are quiet. The appliance could be behaving as before while the background sound has changed.

That possibility should not be used to dismiss a persistent concern. It simply improves the description: “I first noticed it after moving the table” is different from “the sound started immediately after the machine was installed.” Both observations may help, but they suggest different questions.
Timing is often more informative than an imitation
Trying to describe a noise as “brr-click-clunk” can be surprisingly difficult. A short account of when it happens may be clearer: when the door closes, when water dispenses, during final spin, or every time a particular stage begins.
Consider two hypothetical refrigerator reports. In one, a brief sound occurs when ice drops into the bin and the appliance otherwise behaves normally. In the other, a new loud sound continues while the refrigerator no longer maintains its expected temperature. The word “clunk” cannot capture the difference.
Record the duration approximately rather than pretending to have measured it precisely. “Several seconds after using the dispenser” is useful. “Exactly seven seconds” should be reserved for something you actually timed, and even then it is an observation rather than a universal threshold.
If a display shows an error or alert, copy it exactly. A manufacturer's code can carry more specific information than a broad sound description. Include the code even if it disappears later.
Performance belongs in the same conversation
A noise question becomes more informative when paired with what the appliance is doing. Is the washer completing its cycle? Are the dishes clean? Is the refrigerator maintaining the temperature indicated by a suitable thermometer? Is there a visible leak?
Do not use the presence or absence of noise as the sole test of function. A quiet appliance can still have a problem, and a working appliance can make normal operating sounds. Sound is one observation among several.
For a dishwasher, GE explains that a repeated tapping sound can accompany a blocked spray arm. Looking at the stopped machine's load, according to the manual, may reveal an object in the arm's path. That is a specific supported possibility, not a rule that every tap means the same thing.

Use accessible observations, not exploratory repairs
You can note whether a loose item on top of a nearby surface is vibrating, whether dishes are touching, or whether a load contains one bulky item. Follow the appliance instructions before changing anything and wait for it to stop where required.
Avoid opening service panels, reaching behind moving equipment, or pulling out heavy appliances simply to put an ear closer. Refrigerators, washers, and dishwashers can involve electrical, water, mechanical, and other hazards that are not apparent from the outside.
Bosch's refrigerator noise guidance acknowledges both ordinary motor sound and possible internal problems, and points users toward the manual or support when concerned. A manufacturer may discuss a component without making its inspection an appropriate household task.
Treat a video of someone else's repair as a description of their case. Similar sound does not prove the same component failed in your appliance, and a different model may require a different procedure. Replacing parts based on sound resemblance can be expensive and unsafe.
A recording should preserve the circumstances
If the appliance can safely remain in ordinary operation, a short recording from a safe position may help support hear the pattern. Include a spoken note or written description of the cycle stage and where you were standing.
Record the normal surrounding context rather than moving the phone into a dangerous position for a louder clip. Phone microphones can alter apparent loudness and emphasize some frequencies, so a recording should accompany your description rather than replace it.
Do not edit several events into one continuous clip without saying so. Support may need to know whether a sound repeats regularly or happened once. A clear original sample and a brief timeline are easier to interpret than an elaborate montage.
For privacy, avoid capturing household conversations, visible account details, or other material unrelated to the appliance. You can often point the camera at the exterior control panel or record sound without filming the rest of the room.
Two useful reports from ordinary laundry and kitchen tasks
For a washer: “The machine shakes during the final spin when washing this one large item. It completed an ordinary clothing load yesterday. This is the code shown.” That description keeps the load, timing, comparison, and display together.
The next question may concern washer load balance, item suitability, or installation. The report does not jump straight to a broken motor. If the machine moves violently, stop the activity instead of repeating it for a better comparison.
For a refrigerator: “I hear a brief gurgle after closing the door. I first noticed it this week; I do not know whether it happened before. Here is the model and the temperature observation.” This distinguishes what is known from what is uncertain.
Neither report guarantees a diagnosis. Both make the conversation with support more efficient because the person helping does not have to reconstruct the basic circumstances from a single word such as “noisy.”
Keep the outcome with the observation
If the manufacturer identifies the sound as expected for the model, save that explanation and its source. If service is needed, record what the technician actually found separately from earlier guesses.
A household repair record can hold the date, model, recording, support response, and completed action. That is especially useful when an intermittent sound returns after a quiet period.
The purpose is not to monitor every click in the house. It is to recognize a meaningful change, describe it accurately, and know the boundary between an ordinary user check and work that needs qualified help. A good observation can be valuable without becoming a do-it-yourself diagnosis.
